REPAIR YOUR FILE SYSTEM

Many people are unaware that there is a simple command line program in Windows 2000 © and Windows XP © that will run a repair application on your hard disk. This is very useful for solving file system problems or lost clusters of information. It is a good idea to run this  application at least once per month. Here are the instructions;

  1. Click the "START" button

  2. Then Choose "RUN"

  3. Type "CMD" in the RUN box

  4. Choose "OK"

The Command Prompt will open.

  1. Type "CHKDSK /F" (without the quotes, make sure there is a space between the "K" and the slash) into the prompt.

  2. Hit "ENTER".

You will see a message generated by Windows © noting that the "Drive is locked and the CHKDSK cannot be performed until a restart occurs". Choose "Y" for yes and close the Prompt by typing "EXIT" You now must restart for the CHKDSK to start.
