TEST YOUR NETWORK CONNECTION

Many people are unaware that there is a simple command line program in Windows 95/98/ME © , Windows 2000 © and Windows XP © that will test your network connection.

  1. Click the "START" button

  2. Then Choose "RUN"

  3. Type "CMD" (win 2000/XP) or "WINIPCFG" (win95/98/ME) in the RUN box

  4. Choose "OK"

FOR WIN 2000/XP USERS

The Command Prompt will open.

  1. Type "IPCONFIG /all" (without the quotes, make sure there is a space between the "G" and the slash) into the prompt.

  2. Hit "ENTER".

You will see a message generated by Windows © showing the connection status of all your network adapters. You should be able to read your IP address and DNS servers. If your IP address is either 0.0.0.0 or 169.x.x.x (x replaces any number), then you have no TCP/IP connection.

You may also release the adapter by typing IPCONFIG /RELEASE_ALL To renew the adapter's IP address from the DHCP server type IPCONFIG /RENEW_ALL

To flush your DNS cache type IPCONFIG /FLUSHDNS

FOR WIN 95/98/ME USERS

The WINIPCFG box will open. Drop the connection selection box down to show the connection you wish to see information on. You should now be able to see the IP address. If you wish to try and re-establish your connection, you may click the "RELEASE ALL" button, wait 10 or 15 seconds. You may now click the "RENEW ALL" button to try reconnect. As said above, if you have an IP address of 0.0.0.0 or any 169.x.x.x, you do not have a valid network connection. This may not work on your network. Please consult your ISP support team if you experience difficulties.
